In the collaboration of posts that made up this blog, I jumped in with an overview of how the Kansas City Chief’s were making an impact on and off the field by starting the First Downs for Down Syndrome Foundation. In Gaining Ground for A Winning Cause I talked about how former coaches son was born with Down Syndrome, so he wanted to find a way to support and raise awareness in an effective way.  This post helped to show the business side of the NFL by making readers aware of the way a team was going beyond the football field and using their spotlight to help raise money.

After a hiatus from the blog due to personal issues, I then focused on the sometimes-touchy subject of race in the league. Racism? In the NFL?  was written to shed light on the lack of leadership positions held by African-American players. Attributed to the fact that the league was built on a foundation of white male leaders, this has been a trend that has continued on. This shows a problem in respect to business because all “employees” may feel as though they are not properly being represented.

My final two posts Drug Abuse and Support focused on the players and their families and how the NFL affects their lives. Drug Abuse was focused on the issue of misuse of painkillers following injuries to players and how this issue is often overlooked because people are expecting results every Sunday. Support focused on the recourses available to players and their families while in the NFL and after due to all of the stressors they’re subjected to. These topics relate to business in that these people are what make up the NFL, without them there would be no league. As with any business, it’s important that employees are being taken care of so that the company as a whole stays strong.

Although I had a rough go at it, I enjoyed learning about the NFL beyond what is seen on the field during the season. For me, it made the sport a lot more real to me and allowed me to get a glimpse at the lives behind the players. While I did enjoy the work that I did and learned that I do like blogging, I will not continue on the topic of the NFL.

Best,

Kassie Mirabal
